The Current State of Conservatism: A Personal Reflection on Politics and Values
Navigating the political landscape as a lifelong conservative has become increasingly complex and disheartening. Having supported the Conservative Party for decades—from voting to volunteering and donating—I’ve witnessed significant shifts that challenge my core beliefs and loyalty.
A Personal Background in Conservative Values
My political stance has always been rooted in fiscal responsibility and a commitment to traditional, conservative principles. I’ve also held progressive values in areas like social responsibility and individual freedoms. Much of this was driven by a desire to counteract what I see as the excesses of woke culture and cancel culture, which I believe can hinder honest dialogue and respect.
Disillusionment with Current Leadership
Recent Canadian political leadership has been deeply troubling. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in my opinion, has often been an embarrassment at the national and international levels. Issues like SNC-Lavalin, the handling of the JWR case, and recent debates over internet regulation and privacy have further eroded my confidence and respect.
While previous leaders like Andrew Scheer and Erin O’Toole were more centrist and capable of compromise, the current leadership has taken a dramatically different direction. Candice Bergen’s appointment as interim leader marked a pivotal point; her associations and rhetoric have raised serious concerns. Her apparent support for fringe elements and populist movements—some associated with controversial and even radical groups—has been troubling.
The Shift Towards Extremism Within the Party
It is alarming to observe how certain factions within the party now seem to endorse or tolerate far-right ideologies, including alignment with groups that undermine civic order and promote harmful conspiracy theories. Meeting and dining with individuals linked to radical movements, or expressing support for their views, conflicts with the traditional conservative focus on law, order, and civic responsibility.
Conservative Values and Current Trends
Values such as supporting science, public health policies, and protecting vulnerable populations do not contradict conservative principles—they form part of a responsible, pragmatic approach to governance. The blurring lines between mainstream conservative values and fringe or radical ideologies are concerning, especially when they threaten the integrity of the party’s core principles.
Reflections on Canadian Political Parties
The current landscape feels fragmented. The New Democratic Party (NDP) leans too far to the left for my comfort, and the Liberal Party exemplifies what I see as entrenched corruption. Meanwhile, the Conservative Party seems to have shifted away from its traditional roots, embracing rhetoric and alliances that feel incompatible with its historical mission. The Prosperity Party (PPC), with its radical rhetoric, further complicates the political spectrum.
A Conservative Without a Clear Party
As a progressive conservative, I find myself in search of a political home that aligns with my values—something that feels increasingly elusive in today’s atmosphere. Loyalty to the party I’ve supported for decades has been tested, as I grapple with witnessing what I once believed in being overshadowed by divisive and extreme ideologies.
Final Thoughts
The landscape of conservative politics is at a crossroads. It’s painful to see the principles I value compromised or discarded in favor of populist and radical agendas. While I maintain strong opinions about current leadership and policies, I remain committed to the ideals of responsible governance, civic responsibility, and respect for all citizens.
In writing this, I aim to express my frustrations and hopes for a future where conservative values are upheld with integrity and rationality. Perhaps, in time, a balanced and inclusive conservative movement can emerge that truly represents its foundational principles.
