Celebrating One Year of Hosting Small LAN Parties in Ottawa
This New Year marks a significant milestone: one year since I began hosting small LAN parties in Ottawa. The journey from my previous location in Toronto to this vibrant city has been transformative, especially with the newfound space available in my home.
Relocating from Toronto, where space was limited, to Ottawa has offered the ideal environment to revive my passion for LAN gaming. The house features a finished basement area perfect for setting up desks and Ethernet drops, along with an unfinished section designated for a network rack to house all support hardware. This setup has created the perfect environment for local gaming gatherings.
The initial stages of organizing these LAN events posed challenges. Convincing friends and local gamers to participate took time, and the first event in February 2024 hosted only three other players alongside myself. However, sharing photos of the setup on social media groups sparked interest and word-of-mouth referrals. As a result, the community grew steadily—today, I can comfortably fill all ten seats available. Hosting a dedicated Discord server and engaging with the community online have further enhanced the experience, leading to vibrant, spontaneous gaming sessions.
What’s truly rewarding is the resurgence of social interaction through in-person gaming. There’s a unique joy in playing games with friends physically present in the same room—a sensation that online voice chats and virtual environments can’t replicate. The atmosphere becomes more lively, and the shared experience fosters camaraderie and memorable moments.
One of the highlights of these gatherings occurs around 5 p.m., when it’s time to order pizza for everyone. It’s in these moments I reflect on how much time has passed—sometimes I lose track of my phone, realizing hours later that we’ve been fully immersed in gaming and conversation.
Hosting these LAN parties has not only rekindled a beloved hobby but also strengthened social bonds and created a vibrant local gaming community. With continued enthusiasm, I look forward to many more gatherings ahead and the joy they bring to everyone involved.
