Olivia Chow Addresses Transit Signal Priority on Eglinton and Finch

In ongoing discussions about transportation enhancements in the city, Mayor Olivia Chow has shared her perspective on the implementation of transit signal priority (TSP) along key transit corridors such as Eglinton and Finch. During a recent exchange, Chow emphasized the importance of prioritizing passenger throughput to improve overall transit efficiency.

When asked whether she is concerned that transit signal priority might cause delays for cars and other traffic, Chow articulated her stance on balancing traffic flow with service capacity. She stated, “At the end of the day, it’s about the number of people served. The higher the number of people served—whether through light rail transit (LRT) or buses—the more they should be prioritized.”

Chow further clarified her position by illustrating the concept with a simple analogy: “If a bus is carrying 30 people, I believe that bus should have priority over a couple of cars that each carry two people. Would I give priority to 30 people versus two? Yes, I would.”

This perspective underscores her commitment to transit efficiency and passenger convenience, prioritizing larger groups of commuters to optimize public transportation services across the city. As Toronto continues to expand its transit infrastructure, such policies aim to enhance reliability and encourage more residents to utilize sustainable transportation options.
