The neighborhood is neither the worst nor the best, but I wasn’t at my best either. Having grabbed a few essentials, I left the store feeling drained but ready to continue my day.
Several kilometers later, I pulled off onto the highway to refuel. After filling my tank with unleaded regular, I proceeded inside the gas station to settle my bill. That’s when I experienced a moment of panic: I reached into my bag to retrieve my wallet, only to realize it was missing. I had not stopped anywhere else, so I knew it had to be at the grocery store. I distinctly remembered placing it in my cart with the groceries—a routine I usually follow.
