Advocating for Justice: Combating Wage Theft through Legislative Reform
Wage theft remains a significant issue affecting workers across Canada, undermining their financial security and trust in the justice system. Recent stories highlight the urgency of addressing this problem through meaningful legislative change.
For those unfamiliar with the severity of wage theft, I encourage you to read the CBC feature by Zikun Xu, which details the personal experience of a worker who faced corporate wage theft. This case exemplifies a broader systemic failure: the current civil remedies are insufficient to deter dishonest employers. Many employers, despite receiving directives from the Ministry of Labour, continue to withhold wages without facing substantial consequences, leaving employees deprived of their rightful earnings.
The Need for Criminal Legislation
The existing civil framework often lacks the teeth required to hold exploitative employers accountable. When civil penalties fail to dissuade such practices, criminal law becomes a crucial tool in safeguarding workers’ rights. Recognizing this, advocacy efforts are underway to reinstate criminal provisions for deliberate wage theft under the Criminal Code.
Join the Movement: Sign the Petition
To this end, I have sponsored an official Parliamentary Petition, e-7842, to advocate for the reintroduction of criminal law measures targeting wage theft. This petition seeks to amend the Criminal Code to classify and enforce wage theft as a criminal offence, ensuring that offenders face appropriate legal consequences.
I am deeply grateful to NDP Member of Parliament Don Davies for his sponsorship of this initiative. His support underscores the bipartisan recognition of the importance of protecting workers nationwide.
Your Support Matters
If you believe in holding employers accountable and protecting workers from exploitation, I invite you to support this cause by signing and sharing the petition. Canadian citizens and residents—including those with permanent resident status or work permits—are eligible to participate.
Together, we can push for stronger legal protections and a fairer system that discourages wage theft. Every signature brings us closer to meaningful reform.
