PSA: Please don’t kick automatic door buttons

Respecting Accessibility and Hygiene: The Importance of Properly Using Automatic Door Buttons

In recent times, awareness around accessibility and hygiene has grown significantly, emphasizing the need for considerate behaviors in public spaces. One particular area that warrants attention is the proper use of automatic door buttons, especially for individuals who rely on wheelchairs or have mobility challenges.

Many people have observed a tendency to kick or stomp on automatic door activation buttons, often as a means to avoid touching high-touch surfaces directly with their hands. While this behavior may stem from a desire to minimize contact during health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, it inadvertently creates challenges for those with mobility limitations.

For wheelchair users, reaching or pressing these buttons can be difficult. Often positioned at heights that are not easily accessible from a seated position, they require alternative methods of activation. Using elbows or hips to press buttons is a recommended practice. These methods help maintain hygiene and ensure that surfaces are not contaminated with dirt, saliva, or other substances that may be on footwear or clothing.

It is also important to consider the cleanliness of footwear, particularly in outdoor environments where shoes may come into contact with contaminants. For example, stepping on a cigarette or other debris and then pressing a door button with the same foot can transfer germs and bacteria directly onto surfaces that many rely on to enter or exit buildings.

Promoting awareness and gentle habits in our communal spaces benefits everyone. By consciously using elbows, hips, or other parts of the body to activate automatic doors, we help maintain sanitary conditions and support accessibility efforts. Avoiding foot contact with these devices not only aligns with best hygiene practices but also demonstrates respect for the needs of all individuals in shared environments.

Let us all be mindful of our actions and foster a considerate, accessible, and hygienic public space for everyone.

Note: The importance of hygiene and accessibility extends beyond individual convenience—it’s a collective effort to ensure safety and inclusivity.
