The City is Ignoring Road Salt Warnings AGAIN! Our Local Waterways are at Risk

City Continues to Overlook Road Salt Warnings, Putting Local Waterways at Risk

As a dedicated volunteer with Ottawa Riverkeeper for over five years, I have been monitoring the impacts of road salt on our local environment. Unfortunately, recent observations reveal a troubling pattern: the city’s ongoing excessive use of salt on certain pathways and infrastructure, despite clear warnings and previous efforts to address the issue.

Recently, I documented an area in Pierre Roque Park—a pathway and bridge—where salt application appears to be far beyond recommended levels. A metal warning plate visibly states: “DO NOT APPLY SALT OR CALCIUM,” yet the site was heavily salted. This is not an isolated incident; I previously reported similar oversalting last winter. While the city made adjustments at that time, the problem has resurfaced, as my recent testing confirms with high chloride concentrations indicating significant salt runoff.

This recurring oversalting is a serious concern. Excess salt washing into nearby creeks and streams pollutes our waterways and threatens the health of the Ottawa River ecosystem. A one-time correction is insufficient; what is needed are comprehensive, permanent operational controls. This includes targeted training for maintenance crews and clear policies to prevent unnecessary salt application in sensitive areas.

Public awareness and community engagement are crucial. We must hold local authorities accountable to adopt sustainable practices that safeguard our environment. Oversalting not only wastes resources but also poses long-term ecological risks.

To protect our waterways, residents are encouraged to report instances of excessive salting—either through the city’s online reporting tools or by calling 3-1-1—and to advocate for policy changes promoting responsible salt use.

Actions You Can Take:

  • If you notice oversalting, contact your City Councillor to highlight the issue and support the implementation of sustainable long-term policies.
  • Report oversalting incidents through official channels to help hold the city accountable.

Let’s work together to ensure responsible road maintenance that preserves the integrity of our waterways for generations to come.
