Urgent Wildlife Alert: Red-Eared Slider Turtle Released into Ashbridges Bay Waters
A distressing incident occurred last night at approximately 10:00 PM near the Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club, involving the release of a pet turtle into Lake Ontario. The turtle, a 10-year-old female Red-Eared Slider, is valued not only as a beloved companion but also as an introduced species that could impact local ecosystems if not recovered promptly.
Description of the Turtle:
– Species: Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans)
– Size: Approximately 10 inches in shell length
– Age: 10 years
– Appearance: Characteristic red patch behind each ear, greenish-brown shell, and a friendly demeanor
Situation Details:
The turtle was wrongfully released into the marina waters by an individual at night. Currently, she is likely hiding among docks, boat slips, or crevices near the yacht club. As the morning warms up, she may attempt to emerge to bask in the sun, making her more visible.
Call to Action:
If you are a boater, paddleboarder, or a pedestrian walking near the Ashbridges Bay Marina or Woodbine Beach area this morning, please remain vigilant for a large turtle. Spotting her on docks, boat ramps, or floating structures can be critical for her recovery.
How to Help:
– Keep an eye out for the turtle’s distinctive size and appearance
– Avoid disturbing her if seen; instead, note her location
– Contact the provided channels immediately with sightings for coordinated assistance
Importance of Recovery:
As a captive pet, the turtle’s survival in the wild, especially in a large body of water like Lake Ontario, is not feasible long-term. Prompt recovery not only reunites her with her owner but also prevents potential ecological disturbances.
Contact Information:
If you observe the turtle or have relevant information, please reach out promptly through direct messaging or contact local wildlife rescue organizations. Your help is invaluable in ensuring her safe return.
Conclusion:
The community’s combined effort can make a significant difference in recovering this pet and safeguarding the local environment. Your vigilance and quick action are greatly appreciated in this urgent situation.
